Born on January 4th in Brooklyn, NY Peter started playing guitar and bass at age 12. Steele formed his first heavy metal band in 1979 called Fallout. Three years later he disbanded Fallout to form a much faster, thrash style band called Carnivore. Carnivore released their self-titled debut album in 1985 and the follow-up Retaliation in 1987 before disbanding
In 1989, Peter along with childhood friends Josh Silver, Kenny Hickey, and Sal Abruscato formed a band that originally went by the name Repulsion and then Subzero before a radio ad for blood donors gave Peter the idea to call the band Type O Negative. They released their first album Slow, Deep and Hard in 1991 followed by Origin of the Feces in 1992. In 1993, the band released their best selling album Bloody Kisses which achieved Platinum status and solidified the band as the founders of Goth Metal. Type O would go on to release 1996's October Rust followed by World Coming Down in 1999.
Peter's drug addiction and depression was taking its toll on him for which he would eventually seek psychiatric treatment. His struggles would continue and were very well documented on the band's 2003 release titled Life Is Killing Me. In 2005, the band published on their website a picture of a tombstone bearing Peter's name and the dates 1962 - 2005 setting the internet abuzz with unconfirmed rumors of his death. Although obviously a gag, rumors and concern over Peter's health continued to grow. In 2006, Peter reunited with his band Carnivore for a handful of European festival dates and a U.S tour before entering the studio with Type O for the band's final album Dead Again released in 2007.
Peter Steele died suddenly on April 14, 2010 of an aortic aneurysm at his home in New York. The remaining members of Type O have all stated that they have no interest in ever replacing Peter and thus Type O Negative officially disbanded with Peter's death. \m/RIP\m/
