5. Their Music Sounds As Good Today As It Did 40 Years Ago.
Listen to, "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", "Sweat Leaf", "War Pigs", or any Sabbath song, and they still sound amazing. Any classic Black Sabbath song could premier today and if you heard it for the first time it would still be metal gold. The music, lyrics and sound will stand the test of time.
4. Tony, Geezer, and Bill
The music that these three make is beautiful, violent and perfect. Tony Iommi, is a guitar legend, and the riffs he has played will go down in history as some of the best of all time. Thank God an industrial accident didn't deprive us from his greatness. Listen to the story from Mr. Iommi himself here.
Bill Ward's jazz and big band influences on drums, along with Geezer Butler's trippy bass playing (he was inspired by Jack Bruce and was Sabbath's main lyricist), make up one of music's greatest rhythm sections. Ward is one of rock and metal's greatest drummers, and Butler's grooves are the chugging bass line that IS, heavy metal. Hell, Bill Ward, was the top drummer on our recent "Greatest Heavy Metal Drummers" list. To check out our Greatest Metal Drummers list click here.
3. John Michael "OZZY" Osbourne
"I've done some bad things in my time. I've always been drawn to the dark side, me. But I ain't the devil. I'm just John Osbourne: a working-class kid from Aston, who quit his job in the factory and went looking for a good time." This excerpt from Ozzy's biography, "I Am Ozzy," sums it all up. (Click here to get Ozzy's biography). Ozzy, is metal's quintessential front man. He is, and always will be, music's Prince Of Darkness.
2. "Black Sabbath" is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Starting with the rain falling and bells chiming at the beginning of the title track, to final track, "The Warning," you are taken on a hair raising journey into doom, despair and the birth of a new musical sound. Great music, like all art, creates an emotional response with the listener. This album does that for a glorious, 38 minutes and 12 seconds. Black Sabbath," is metal's greatest album, and one of the greatest albums of all time, regardless of genre.
1. They are the GODFATHER'S of heavy metal. We owe it all to them.
When Black Sabbath formed in 1968, peace and love was reverberating from Haight-Ashbury. But in post war Birmingham England, peace and love was not the over riding feeling. In Birmingham, you either went to the factory or went to jail. It is from this gloomy environment that Black Sabbath was born, and thus, heavy metal was born. Listen to, "Black Sabbath," and realize how unique and different that album's sound is compared to the other music from the late 60's. Black Sabbath rebelled against the norm of the hippy era and that rebellion is the theme that has stayed with heavy metal ever since.
Thank you Black Sabbath. Thank you for creating the music that has been the sound track of my life.
